Structural strengthening

We have extensive experience working with companies in the construction industry whose product-specific solutions often require complex design calculations based on the continuously evolving state of the art. To address these requirements, we develop specialist engineering solutions for applications such as the subsequent strengthening of existing structures, punching shear reinforcement and installation fastening systems.

Punching shear is a specific design challenge in the calculation of solid slabs supported by columns and walls. The individual standards, including EC2, SIA 213 and ACI 318, provide different detailed design approaches. These are supplemented by manufacturer-specific requirements and special technical assessments. Several software solutions are available for punching shear design, differing primarily in the level of detail with which specific design features are represented. With its capabilities for calculating semi-precast slabs and steel shear heads, S&P’s software is a technological leader in this field.

Post-installed reinforcement connections are frequently used to connect existing concrete structural elements to new components. Various manufacturers offer suitable products and approvals for this purpose. While the calculation itself is relatively straightforward, the main challenge often lies in optimising the connection. Reducing both the number of required drill holes and their embedment depth is crucial to the cost-effectiveness of the connection.

Structural strengthening using FRP laminates is a highly specialised solution that requires extensive technological expertise. The calculation and consideration of creep and shrinkage demand a thorough and detailed assessment of the required structural verifications.
