Structural timber engineering encompasses a wide variety of possible connections between different materials. Traditional carpentry joints, such as dovetail and mortise-and-tenon joints, are increasingly being replaced by simpler connection solutions using suitable structural screws. Calculation modules can be developed for main-to-secondary beam connections, tension and shear connections, and prefabricated construction, as well as for the design and reinforcement of beam ends requiring refurbishment.

Timber construction screws can be used both in areas at risk of tension perpendicular to the grain—such as notches, openings and transverse tension reinforcement—and in areas subject to increased compression perpendicular to the grain, for example for support reinforcement. Where the usage requirements for timber floors change, suitable fasteners can also be used for beam build-ups, rafter reinforcement and lateral beam strengthening.

Complete systems, such as above-rafter insulation for roofs and façades as well as timber-concrete composite structures, are generally governed by specific approvals. Software-based optimisation of fastener spacing is virtually essential in order to provide suitable design proposals. Multiple design calculations can identify the most economical solution within seconds.
